Both Sunni and Shia Muslims believe in the Mahdi, though with differing interpretations. In Shia Islam, the Mahdi is the twelfth Imam, currently in occultation, awaiting his return. Sunni traditions describe the Mahdi as a future leader who will emerge to defeat evil and establish righteousness. The Mahdi's arrival is seen as a sign of the coming of the Day of Judgment.
